Peter Copeland was a passionate and prolific sound engineer, working on a large number of wildlife films throughout his long and varied career. Responsible for the final mix on David Attenborough's groundbreaking series, Life on Earth (1979), Peter's talent for sound recording was spotted at school.

Encouraged by his teachers, Peter applied to the BBC and was accepted into their Control Room at Bush House. Peter then worked on a diverse mix of shows throughout the early 1960s. By the mid 1960s he became studio manager at Broadcasting House and later moved to BBC Bristol.

Working with the Natural History Unit, Peter contributed to a wide range of productions, taking responsibility for sound on Eastward with Attenborough (1973-1974), Wilderness (1974) and numerous programmes for The World About Us and Wildlife on One strands.

Spending several years as senior dubbing mixer, Peter left the BBC in 1986 to work at the National Sound Archive (now part of the British Library). Responsible for rescuing and preserving many historic recordings, Peter spent over fifteen years working at the archive before his retirement in 2002.

Peter died on the 30th July 2006, aged 64.
