Michele Binder Hall

Howard and Michele Hall being interviewed for WildFilmHistory

In 1990, Michele left her 19 year career as a paediatric nurse to work with her husband, renowned marine cinematographer Howard Hall. Their formidable partnership has since resulted in a collection of iconic and critically acclaimed underwater films.

Michele's interest in the ocean world developed when, in 1975, after moving to San Diego, she took up SCUBA diving. Howard was her instructor and, over the next few years Michele became both an accomplished diver and a married woman. After their 1981 wedding, Howard continued to build a reputation for high quality underwater filming, gaining huge international success for his 1990 film Seasons of the Sea.

After this huge boost to his career, Howard persuaded Michele to leave her job and join him permanently at Howard Hall Productions. She has co-produced all of their subsequent films, working on Shadows in a Desert Sea (1993), Jewels of the Caribbean Sea (1994) and their PBS series Secrets of the Ocean Realms (1997).

In 1994 the couple produced Into the Deep, the first IMAX 3D underwater feature which for many years was the highest grossing IMAX 3D film ever made. The pair continued their success in the IMAX format with Island of the Sharks (1999) and, more recently, Deep Sea 3D (2006).

Michele has also had many of her underwater photographs and articles published, contributing to numerous periodicals including BBC Wildlife Magazine and Natural History Magazine.
